Chargeable weight

When shipping internationally, 3PL companies don’t always use the parcel’s actual weight to calculate costs. Instead, they compare the actual weight to its volumetric weight and charge whichever is higher.

Volumetric weight formula

  • Unlike local orders, volumetric weight is considered when it comes to pricing.
  • 3PL charge based on the gross weight of the parcel or the volumetric weight of the parcel, whichever is higher.
  • Volumetric weight is calculated as LxWxH/5000

Example 1: Gross weight greater than volumetric weight

A parcel weighing 0.5 Kg and having dimensions of 10x10x10 will be charged as 0.5 Kg (Expand to see details).

10x10x10 = 1000

1000/5000 = 0.2

0.2 Kg < 0.5 Kg

Example 2: Volumetric weight greater than gross Wweight

A parcel weighing 0.5 Kg and having dimensions of 20x20x20 will be charged as 2 Kg (Expand to see details)

20x20x20 = 8000

8000/5000 = 1.6

1.6 Kg > 0.5Kg

It is very important clients and customers are aware of this fact because it might cause confusion or miscalculation of the rates.

3PL use scales and spatial machines to reweigh and recalculate the dimensions of the parcel. So, the product information must be as accurate as possible when delivering internationally.

The maximum weight we handle is 25 Kg. Parcels weighing above 25 Kg should be broken down into several parcels
